about

Originally planned as part of the "Write an album in May" project sponsored by The Album Writing Club and Lights and Lines (until my studio suffered a catastrophic equipment failure forcing me to drop out), this is a protest EP.

The US has been through a few troubled years, and it doesn't look like it's going to subside anytime soon. From the attempted coup on January 6, 2021 to the elimination of Abortion as a right to a forced cult-like and Talibanish version of Christianity to evident and obvious corruption on the political right - I wanted to take a look at how this feels to the people swept up in the whirlwind of modern American life and want no part of the circus that is being forced upon us.

The opening track is a remake of an old Nick Lowe song. The original is light and bouncy but the lyrics have always seems sinister to me, so I re-worked the track to reflect this.

"Woke AF" is meant to be a direct kick in the balls to the State of Florida.

"Elusive Green" has always been an environmental song, but I wanted to make it more obvious for the purposes of this EP, so I've added in protests captured from news broadcasts from all over the world.

"Ordinary Life" is the heart of the album, about a man just trying to protect his daughter from the madness. It was inspired by a conversation with a friend who currently lives in Texas.

As for the style - I'm not really into being recognized as part of a specific style of music. I will admit that there is a bit of Pink Floyd in the opening and closing tracks, but I wasw more interested in the message as opposed to having all the songs be in the same style. There is a coherent narrative here and that was my primary focus. I have always considered myself a storyteller and a writer of songs for people in hard times, and as I said, this is a reflection of now.
